Oily skin produces increased amounts of sebum. The pores are often enlarged, clearly visible and could get easily clogged. Oily skin is prone to blackheads and blemishes. After cleansing, oily skin will feel clean and oil-free. Shortly after cleansing, the shine will return.
- Gently blot excess oil with a tissue when needed. Do not rub as it can cause bacteria to spread across your face.
- Use a toner/facial mist – not only helps with the hydration of the skin but facial mists also facilitate the absorption of nutrients from your serum, oil, cream or balm.
- Befriend oils – natural oils are not enemies of oily skin. Jojoba oil for example is extremely light, and the nearest in molecular structure to our own natural sebum. The key here is to use products formulated for oily skin as they incorporate oils which balance the sebum production.
- Stay away from drying or harsh ingredients which might make your skin squeaky clean but will make things worse in the long run.
- Cleanse morning, evening and after excessive sweating or workout.
- Don’t skip the moisturizer.
- Exfoliate gently and regularly, that is twice a week. Don’t over-scrub your skin. Exfoliation is essential to promote cell turnover and prevent sebum buildup in pores. As oilier skin is more prone to blemishes and acne, it is also more prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation. Exfoliation will also help lighten these dark spots by polishing away the uppermost layers of skin and revealing new cells.
- Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. You can use moisturizers with SPF30 or you can apply sunscreen with SPF30 after you moisturize.
- Stay hydrated – drinking enough water is a great way to flush out internal toxins and hydrate your skin from the inside out.
- Workout – exercise increases blood circulation. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin.
- Avoid touching your face - your hands are constantly coming into contact with dirt and bacteria throughout the day. When you touch your face you’re introducing all that grime to your skin it could cause breakouts.
- Keep stress at bay - stress can affect your whole body, including your skin, hair, and nails. Meditation is a great way to keep the stress level low
- Get enough sleep - a lack of sleep interrupts your body's ability to maintain healthy skin.
- Eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. In general, bright colored fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants - blueberries, beans, cranberries, apples, whole grains, spinach, and peppers. For omega-3 fatty acids, eat foods like walnuts, avocado, and flaxseed. Especially if you don't eat fish, consider taking fish oil as a supplement. Avoid processed foods and foods high in sugar.
